Have a blog and not sure what topics to write about?

We’ve all been there. It’s important to have a strategy behind what you post on your blog. That way you’re not scrambling around for content ideas or writing articles that no one bothers to read.

This article will share the best ways to get blog post ideas and provide you with over 50 topics so your next handful of blog posts are covered.

How to Find Blog Post Ideas

1) Your target audience.

One of the best ways to get topic ideas is to follow your target audience. Find out where they gather and identify popular discussion points. You can search Facebook groups or any social media platform, Reddit, Quora, coffee shops, or networking events. Notice what your audience is frequently asking or talking about in these settings. You can keep these ideas in a notepad or document to build a log of fresh content ideas.

You can also use social media to ASK your audience what they want to learn about. Post market research questions in Facebook groups or on Reddit and get topic ideas straight from the source.

Here are some questions you can ask to get the conversation started:

  • What 3 things are you struggling with most?

  • What topic would you be interested in learning about in a blog post?

  • Are there controversial discussions happening in your line of business?

  • Are there any products or services you’d like reviewed or compared?

  • What step-by-step guide would be most beneficial to your business today?

You can get more specific with your questions based on your specific niche and business. The point is to ask questions where the answers are potential blog topic ideas.

2) Your competitors.

Identify 3-5 competitors with highly ranking blog articles. You can do this easily by Googling your niche or business offers to see who else is out there. For example, I would Google “SEO writers for Parenting brands”. Once you find a few competitors, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are they posting about?

  • What content of theirs is ranking highest on Google?

  • Most importantly, are there any topics that I could cover better?

It’s important not to plagiarize someone else’s work, but researching your competitors is a good way to see what’s popular and what you can do to stand out.

3) Google Trends.

Google Trends is a free tool that shows how frequently a search term is used in Google. Simply type in a keyword to see its popularity over time. Then, you’ll want to scroll down to “related queries”. The related queries section is where you’ll find popular keywords to cover. Play around with different search terms to see what you might be able to write about.

Once you find at least two keywords from the “related queries” section, you can type them both in at the top of the page to compare their popularity.

I’ll be honest - this isn’t my favorite tool to use. As you can see in the screenshot above, there’s a good amount of data to compare general terms like baby and toddler outfits. However, when you get more specific like “organic cotton baby outfits”, there’s no data to show. So this may be a good tool to start looking for very broad, basic search terms in order to do more in-depth research elsewhere.

4. AI generator tools.

There are helpful AI tools like ChatGPT or Hubspot’s Blog Ideas Generator that can help you come up with ideas. I recommend using these tools only for your brainstorming sessions and not to solidify your topic or headline. Google isn’t a fan of regurgitated or robotic blog content so relying solely on AI could hurt, rather than help, your ranking.

5. Keyword research tools.

My favorite way to get blog topic ideas is to use a keyword research tool. I primarily use Keysearch (paid), but when I first started I used the free version of Ubersuggest. A keyword research tool will help you pick topics based on SEO - Search Engine Optimization. This will ensure your topic is highly sought after and has the potential to help you rank on Google.

You simply type in various search terms and the tool will give you information like how many monthly searches a keyword has and how much existing content is already out there. Read more about the significance of SEO data below.

6. Outsource.

Finding blog topics, especially SEO-friendly ones, can be a really tedious part of blogging. If you don’t have the time, or simply don’t enjoy it, consider handing the task off to someone else. I offer done-for-you SEO topics and headlines designed to help you rank on Google. Perfect for those who enjoy writing, but don’t like to waste time trying to figure out what to write about. How do I know which blog topics are best?

1) Popularity

Blog topics that perform well are those that are high in popularity, or frequently searched. This is why it’s important to use the above methods to find topics that your target audience will want to read about. It’s tempting to write about topics that you enjoy or that you’re already familiar with because it’s much easier to write from your existing knowledge base. However, in order to get your blog in front of more eyes you’ll want to write about what your audience enjoys (or wants to learn).

Writing about popular topics as opposed to familiar topics requires more research, but the results are worth it. If you want to encourage more people to visit your website, step outside of your comfort zone a bit and find trendy topics your audience will love.

2) SEO data

If you want your blog post to show up in Google search results, you must consider Search Engine Optimization. Using a keyword research tool like those mentioned above, you’ll want to find keywords with high volume and low competition. This will indicate that many people are searching for those keywords (high volume), but not a lot of people have written about it yet (low competition). Keyword research tools give you this data in numbers and sometimes even color code it for you, making it easier for you to choose your next best, SEO-friendly topic.

SEO is not everyone’s favorite part of blogging. If you have any questions on SEO or keyword research tools, feel free to contact me here and we can have a quick chat!

3) Relevance

The best blog post topics are relevant to your business and your target audience. You wouldn’t find a cosmetics company writing posts about household budgeting, right? Not unless it includes how to fit lipstick in with your grocery spending. Just because you’ve found a topic that’s really popular doesn’t mean you need to write about it. Make it make sense for your niche and line of business. This will also help make sure that the people who read your post are the same people who would buy your product or service.
